AFMAM Journey: Muhammad Hidayat Fahmi

As an English major student, Hidayat has always been interested in learning more about how the Model ASEAN meeting works. As an alumnus of the eMpowering Youths Across ASEAN, he later learned about ASEAN Foundation Model ASEAN Meeting (AFMAM) program and grew more interest in joining the program.

“AFMAM 2019 has contributed a lot towards my understanding of ASEAN-Australia relations,” he said. Prior to his contribution, he had very little comprehension about ASEAN-Australia. As he joined this program, however, he not only acquired new experiences but also more knowledge. He gained a better understanding on how ASEAN operates in three areas of economy, political-security, and socio-culture.

During his journey in AFMAM, he faced a number of challenges. “Understanding the flow of the ASEAN Meeting is a challenge, since it’s very different from other model meetings,” he explained. However, with further explanations and continuous guidance from the organizer, he managed to overcome this obstacle. He was able to carry out his role in the meeting as Senior Official for Myanmar and Senior Official for Trade and Industry successfully.

He encourages the youth to join this program, regardless of having any experience in ASEAN-related programs. “The basic condition is to just possess enough interest and passion to learn more about ASEAN,” he said. Dedication is the most important thing to have during this program because if you commit yourself to stick through it, you will be able to overcome any obstacle.

Finally, Hidayat notes, “AFMAM is a very good platform for youths to learn more about ASEAN.” He further explained that AFMAM has given a very unique and once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to him: to not only learn about ASEAN, but also practice what he learned through the authentic simulation of ASEAN Meeting.
